Barbara Shepard passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, at the age of 92. She was born on December 2, 1932, to Helen Grace Cox Fish (1911-1984) and Norman Alonzo Fish (1909-1974). Her husband, Joseph Shepard, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025, at the age of 94.

Barbara was preceded in death by her siblings, Norma Jean Snead and Fredric Lee Fish. She is survived by her three children — Robert Madison Pond, Norma Lea Hale, and David Russell Pond — as well as Terri New Pond, Joanie A. Pond, stepdaughter Karen Shepard, stepson Joey Shepard, grandsons, Ryan Eugene Pond, Ian Pond (wife Maria Pond), Trevor Hale, and Jeremi Hale (wife Lyena Hale).

Barbara's career and interests reflected her curiosity, creativity, and commitment to community. She studied at the Laboratory School at Old Dominion University and later worked as a Lab Technician at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, where she was recognized for her professionalism and precision.

She was a talented artist and photographer who found satisfaction in creating and documenting the world around her. Her work in art and photography was a personal passion that she continued throughout her life.

Barbara was deeply involved in her faith communities. She was a longtime member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Portsmouth, Virginia, and later became a Charter Member of Lakeside Lutheran Church in Littleton, North Carolina, in 1992. At ECU Memorial Hospital, she served faithfully in several leadership roles, including Secretary, Treasurer, and President of the hospital's auxiliary.

Those who knew Barbara will remember her as steady, capable, and quietly determined — someone who valued hard work, service, and integrity.

A private family gathering will be held to celebrate her life and to honor the many ways she contributed to her family, her community, and those around her.
