It is with great sadness that we share the untimely passing of Barry Miguel, son of Ronald and Ruth Miguel z”l; father of Zev and Spencer Miguel-Strah; brother of Melanie and Renèe Miguel; uncle to Naomi Rosenblum, Ivria Sisson, Rachel and Sarah Goldberg and Yasmine Shiloh. He was the pride of his family who loved him dearly.

A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Barry was a leader, a change maker and a visionary. The language of style came easily to him, and he knew how to use it as a form of expression. His parents recognized his talent early on, giving him his first Robert Talbott ascot at age 8. Having his family’s support at a time when being openly gay was still dangerous for many, gave him the confidence to forge his own path.

Barry started his career with a love of fashion and the mentorship he received in his first job working with Wilkes Bashford. He held senior leadership roles, including President, CEO, and Global Brand Director, with Versace, Zegna, Marc Jacobs, Nike, Zac Posen, 7 For All Mankind, and Tracy Reese. More recently, he found deep joy teaching Fashion Business as a professor at NYU Gallatin.

Barry was an agent for cultural change and innovation, who took pride in maintaining a workplace defined by personal integrity.

He broke boundaries both professionally and personally, marrying in 2009 before the Marriage Equality law was passed and building a family with their two children, Zev and Spencer. As a multi-racial, Jewish family with two dads, they helped create change just by being themselves. In 2006, Barry and his family were featured in the New York Times, An American Family in the Thanksgiving edition.

He could be playful and irreverent in the way he expressed himself but generally he preferred his clothes black and his home white. He was close with his family throughout his life, introducing his sisters and parents to colleagues, clients and friends wherever he lived. He took his nieces under his wing, sharing his time and attention and letting them know when they really ought to reconsider a particular outfit.

He lived for his sons, Zev and Spencer. He was grateful for every day with them and reveled in seeing them become ever more authentically themselves. He knew what a gift it was to be their father and was held in their embrace when he passed.
