Bernard "Bernie" Edward Wilhelmi, a lifelong resident of Lockport, Illinois, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, in Joliet, Illinois, at the age of 81. Born on August 14, 1944, in Joliet, Bernie lived a life defined by love for his family, a steadfast work ethic, and an appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
Bernie was the devoted husband of Dianne (VanGorder) Wilhelmi for 58 wonderful years. Together, they built a family rooted in love and mutual support. Bernie was the proud father of Tracy Stokes (Wilhelmi), Kris Mietsner (Wilhelmi), and Jodi Wilhelmi. He cherished every moment with his children—whether coaching softball games or running errands to ensure their needs were met (including all girl things) without question or hesitation, instead just simple support.
Affectionately known as "Poppie," Bernie found immense joy in being a grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved cheering on his grandchildren—Cody Slattery, Devin Slattery, Kacey Mietsner, and Grace Stokes—at their sporting events. His great-grandson Mason Slattery brought him unparalleled happiness, and their time together was deeply treasured.
In his younger years, Bernie enjoyed riding his motorcycle and later took pleasure in watching sports with his grandchildren. Above all else, he valued time spent with family—celebrating milestones and creating memories that will be cherished forever.
A man of remarkable determination and work ethic, Bernie carried the values instilled during his upbringing on a farm throughout his life. He worked tirelessly and inspired those around him to approach life with dedication and perseverance.
Bernie is survived by his beloved wife Dianne; children Tracy Stokes (Wilhelmi), Kris Mietsner (Wilhelmi) and her husband Mark, and Jodi Wilhelmi; grandchildren Cody Slattery, Devin Slattery, Kacey Mietsner, Grace Stokes; great-grandson Mason Slattery; and many nieces and nephews who will fondly remember him. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Mary (Seigel) Wilhelmi and siblings Mary (Jast), Shirley (Hamrick), Norma (Kokal), JoAnn (Vanisko), and Robert Wilhelmi.
A celebration of life will be held on April 18, 2026, at Corrigan's Pub in Shorewood (700 W. Jefferson St., Shorewood, IL) from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Please join us in honoring Bernie's legacy of love and devotion to family. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
