Betty Jane Perkins, 74, passed away on December 27, 2025, in Maricopa, Arizona. Born on May 30, 1951, in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, just like one of her favorite books she was a tree that grew from Brooklyn.
She called many places home throughout her journey—Far Rockaway, Bay Ridge Brooklyn, and East Rockaway among them—before settling in Maricopa for her retirement years. In each place she lived, Betty left behind traces of her kindness, strength and loving spirit.
For over twenty years, she worked as a union cleaner with SEIU 32BJ. Her unwavering commitment to her work reflected a resilience that defined so much of her life.
Betty's soul danced to the rhythm of Motown and glided across frozen ponds on skates. Her love for history and genealogy revealed a deep yearning to connect with those who came before her—a pursuit that anchored her firmly to her roots while illuminating the path forward.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Lester Nott Jr.; her sons, Christopher and Michael Nott; sisters, Barbara and Patricia Perkins; and grandchildren Christopher, Lianna, Madeline, and Samantha Nott. She joins in rest her father, Andrew Perkins, and mother, Jane Perkins Burke. She was the foundation of her family and kept everything together.
Betty's presence brightened any room with her kindness and beauty. Though she has departed this world, the echo of her laughter and the imprint of her grace remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
"There's a tree that grows in Brooklyn. Some people call it the Tree of Heaven. No matter where its seed falls, it makes a tree which struggles to reach the sky. It grows in boarded-up lots and out of neglected rubbish heaps. It grows up out of cellar gratings. It is the only tree that grows out of cement.
May her memory continue to be cherished. May her spirit of kindness, love and ability to forgive continue on in her family who loved her so much and will miss her forever.
