Betty Jane McDowell was born Betty Jane Higgs April 21, 1947, in Martin, Tennessee to Opher and Mozell Higgs. Betty had one sibling, brother Gale, who died in 1983.
After graduating from Martin High School, Betty attended the University of Tennessee, Martin. She married Norris Ray McDowell in Martin on June 17, 1967. The couple then moved to Lansing, Michigan and she gave birth to two sons, Steven Marshall and Mark David.
Betty held several jobs but worked and retired from the Tri-County Community Mental Health Center where she won several awards for exemplary job performance.
After Norris retired in the early 1990's, he and Betty moved to Panama City Beach, Florida, where they lived until departing the silvery Gulf Coast for mountainous Etowah, North Carolina in 2003. Several years later they moved to nearby Hendersonville.
A fine communicator, Betty had many cherished friends who felt just as strong about her. She liked reading and was an accomplished needle point artist.
She and Norris had five grandchildren- Max, Ava, Parker, Jacob and Khloe.
She was preceded by death by her parents, Opher and Mozell, her brother Gale and her husband Norris.
Betty will be cremated, and a family gathering will be held to celebrate her life.
