Betty Jean Shoup

Betty Jean Shoup (Nieves, Trejo) aged 88, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, in Carlsbad, CA. Born on May 31, 1937, Betty dedicated her life to her faith and community service, touching many lives with her unwavering commitment to her beliefs.
Betty was a lifelong advocate for Christ, having been reborn in her young adult life. Her work with Teen Challenge and Prison Ministry marked significant contributions to her community, guiding young individuals and advocating against addiction through faith. In the 1970s, she actively participated in protests against pornography in Vista, California, and consistently preached the word of God, impacting not just her family but everyone she met.
In her professional life, Betty worked as a store cashier and greeter, roles that allowed her to connect with and brighten the days of countless people. Her dedication to service was mirrored in her personal pursuits, where she loved spending time at the beach, reading the Holy Bible, and spreading the Word of Christ.
Betty worshiped at various places including the Billy Graham Ministry, Teen Challenge, and At The Cross, where her faith found profound expression and community.
She was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. Betty is survived by her daughters, Lorraine Goggia (Rick), Mona Perez (Benson), Patty, and Cleta Henchmen (John); sons, Ralph Shoup II (Isabel), Dennis Shoup Jr., and Matthew Shoup (Cindy); 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Anna Rodigo. She was preceded in death by her daughter Denise Jean Shoup (Cota) and ex-husband Dennis Lee Shoup Sr.
Services to honor Betty's life will be held privately at At The Cross Church in Oceanside, CA, attended by family and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to San Diego Teen Challenge, an organization very close to her heart.
