Betty Burton Uhlman, 93, beloved sister, aunt, stepmother, grandmother, friend, and member of the Dunwoody Village community, passed away on January 25, 2026. Betty was born December 17, 1932 in El Centro, Colombia and lived there and in Bogota until 1946 when she began attending boarding school in St. Louis, MO. Betty and her younger brother John spent summers in their mother's hometown Preston, ON, Canada. In 1948, her family relocated to Detroit, MI. Betty eventually settled in New York City. Betty earned her BA in mathematics in 1954 from Manhattanville College and enjoyed a successful career in computer programming at Union Carbide, among other companies. She married Walter Uhlman in 1988, relocated to Broomall, Pennsylvania, and became stepmother to his three sons, John, Ted, and Walter Jr.

Betty enriched her family and friends' lives with her sharp wit, love of the arts, and intellectual curiosity. At Dunwoody Village, Betty served on the Dunwoody literature, history, and theater committees. Recently, she starred in a live radio play rendition of MacBeth in which she played Lady MacBeth. A lifelong student, Betty studied literature at the school of continuing education at Temple University, completing an independent project on the historian and philosopher Hannah Arendt. Betty also volunteered for the Democratic Party to register voters and for the Women’s Resource Center to assist victims of domestic violence.

Betty traveled far and wide, from the boulevards of Havana to the Great Wall of China to the remote villages of Burkina Faso, West Africa. She had a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and artistic traditions. With her keen aesthetic sense, Betty curated a remarkable personal collection of fine art and decorative objects from around the world.

Betty is survived by her brother John Burton, nieces Anne Burton Walsh, Elizabeth Rex Burton, and Sarah Burton Kahandaliyanage, stepson Ted Uhlman and his wife Jo Uhlman and their daughter MaryAnn Uhlman. She is also survived by eight great nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.
