Betty Sue Wheeler, 69, departed for her next journey on Sunday, February 9th, 2025. She is survived by her son, John; her nephew, Steve, whom she considered a second son, his wife, Jessica, and their children, Kaleigh, Isabella, and Aidan; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends and found family who lovingly referred to her as "The Mama" or "Aunt Sue".
Betty Sue was born on Groundhog Day in Chama, NM and raised in Cerrillos, NM. Over the course of her life, she traveled frequently and "lived border to border, coast to coast," with jobs as varied as IHOP district manager, National Guard Family Support Assistance Specialist, VFW Bar Manager, and finally scheduling, training, and working end of life care. Her heroes were Auntie Mame, Lucille Ball, and Scarlett O'Hara.
The Mama was a creative force, constantly learning and exploring new art projects and mediums. She was a talented chef with a knack for experimenting with recipes. Her totem was raccoon, and in her heyday she was a proud dumpster-diver so that nothing went to waste. Sue was passionate about animals and would rescue anything not nailed down if she thought it needed help. She read constantly, devouring mountains of digital books.
Aunt Sue was cremated and her ashes scattered to the four winds. In accordance with her wishes there will be no funeral or memorial gathering as she expressed that this would be a waste of her time even in death. In lieu of flowers or donations, know that she loved you and was proud of you.
Good Journey.
