Beverly Armendariz (Holmes) of Lemoore (Hanford) California passed onto Glory on January 4th, 2026, at Kings Nursing Home. Leslie Lane in Hanford California at the age of 89.
Beverly was born on February 8th, 1936, in Melrose Massachusetts, the daughter of Alice A. (Sheppard) and Ashton B. Holmes of Alstead New Hampshire. Beverly began her life contending with much sickness, delays and was not medically expected to live a long life so was not given a middle name, but God had other plans.
At a young age Beverly remembers many moves, especially during the depression. During this time, she said they were very blessed by the help of many families, especially by her Uncle Ira. She spoke of fond memories of the family farm, sugar on snow and being babysat by Aunt May, of walking from her home to the farm and a white flag being raised to let her mother know she arrived safely and the flag going down when she left. Her family at one point lived in the rectory of Walpole Episcopal church (St. John's) as her mother played the organ. Mom had wonderful memories of occupying her time playing paper dolls under the stairs. Beverly graduated from Walpole High School in 1955 was know for her sewing, singing and even basketball. She then received her nursing training and was valedictorian of her class at Peabody Crippled Home for Children. She went onto Boston Children's Hospital as a nurse caring for children and young adults with Polio. She also would help set up homes for those with polio describing large breathing machines and rocking beds. One fond memory mom shared was of a college-aged mother with polio and her baby (Binky), setting them up at home for Christmas and assisting and accompanying them, so they were able to attend church on Christmas Eve. Beverly after this moved on to Geriatric (Elderly) care especially after seeing so many younger ones suffering at the beginning of their lives with polio. She worked in Malden and had a special place in her heart for 181 Court Incorporated, Nursing and Retirement homes (151Court and 39 Summer) in Keene N.H.. For most of Beverly's life except for one chapter of working at MPB in Keene New Hampshire, she was nursing and caretaking for others. For approximately her last 30 years Beverly ran an assisted living home, the Shire Board and Care with family in Somerton Arizona. She finally retired and closed her doors at the age of 72 years old.
Soon after her retirement Beverly suffered a severe stroke and moved to Lemoore California with her daughter, son-in-law and children for 13 years, as she could no longer live alone. During this time there were many family blessings and family memories made, and many hours were spent in card making. Some of most fondest memories time with all her grandchildren and great grandchildren and when her sons (and wife), her brother (and family), her grandson (and family) and her new found nephew and wife (Rick and Jane Campbell) and niece came to California to visit her. In time her health worsened, and she needed 24-hour care, she then became a resident at Kings Nursing in Hanford with a period of time in Hospice. She made the most of wherever God had her. For most of her time at Kings Nursing she served as the president of the resident counsel. Many times, she would be found outside reading, working on a puzzle, playing Bingo, playing cards, doing crafts or at the door greeting visitors with a smile and was a friend to many residents and employees.
Beverly accepted and believed in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and wherever she resided had a church home, one of her dearest church homes was St Paul's Episcopal Church of Yuma AZ where she was a member of the prayer ministry and choir, often seen in front of the congregation leading in song. Even in her last years in the nursing home she participated in Bible Study and lived out her Faith in God.
In her life she was affiliated with many organizations. She had fond memories of the Yuma Woman's Reel and Rifle Club and the American Legion Auxiliary H.H. Donkers day, Unit 19 as a member and past president. Here she received The Western Division (90-91) Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Field Service Volunteer Award for the greatest number of hours to the care and treatment of Veteran Patriots and also a citation for Meritorious Service.
Growing up Beverly had a special pet duck named Oscar. She also had a special place in her heart for pets and even allowed them in the assisted living home. In addition to her love of dogs and cats she had her hummingbird feeders and spent countless hours watching them. She also loved vegetable and flower gardening, canning and cooking.
Beverly's first marriage of 15 years ended in divorce. In her first marriage she had 3 living children, Dianne J. Roche, James T. Roche and Ralph M. Roche III. Beverly's second marriage was to Paul Boisvert (58) until his passing 6 Oct 1989. Beverly's third marriage was to Mike Armendariz (78), until his passing 27 April 2002.
