Bobby Joe "BJ" King, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026, in Saint-Gaudens, France at the age of 85. Born on May 28, 1940, in Dallas, Texas, Bobby lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and meaningful connections.
Bobby graduated from Lincoln High School in Dallas in 1958 and later attended Laney College in Oakland, California. His career with Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) spanned many years and was marked by the friendships he cultivated along the way. After retiring from BART, Bobby embarked on a new chapter of his life by moving to Saint-Laurent, France. There he built a vibrant community of friends who became like family to him.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Bobby served his country with honor before embarking on his civilian career. His love for travel and learning led him to explore different cultures and languages throughout his life. Whether savoring good food and wine or sharing stories and laughter with loved ones, Bobby embraced every moment with joy and enthusiasm.
Bobby and former spouse, Gertrude Bush, married in 1965, and had 2 children. Bobby cherished spending time with his family and friends. He had a special bond with his grandson Caleb Nethery-King, with whom he shared life lessons and wisdom. He also had a deep appreciation for music and found happiness in joking and laughing with those around him. A true lover of simple pleasures, Bobby always looked forward to enjoying KFC whenever he returned to the United States.
He is survived by his son Michael King (Jenne), daughter Stephanie King (Serena), grandsons Alonzo King and Caleb Nethery-King; sister Betty Hooey; nieces Markoh King (Eugene), Lisa King (Polly), Kristie King-Brown (Egon), Leitha McFarland; nephews Darvin Hooey (Kawonna) and Alonzo Ray King; as well as his cousin Sandra Williams. Bobby was predeceased by his parents Alonzo King and Juanita "Sissy" Duffy; niece Kimberly King in 2008; aunt Jessie Holmes in 2014; sister Mildred Faye Smalling King in 2015; brother Alonzo King in 2017; niece Joannie Alexander in 2018; and twin brother Billy Joe King in 2019.
Bobby’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and connection. His adventurous spirit touched everyone who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to share in his remarkable journey.
In lieu of a service, the family invites you to privately celebrate Bobby's memory in your own way - perhaps by enjoying a good meal and raising a glass in his honor.
