Brenda (Hentschel) Goerke, 65, passed away on March 20, 2026, leaving behind a world that feels a little less bright without her in it—but far better for having known her.
Born on September 18, 1960, in Traverse City, Brenda was adopted by Maynard and Jane Hentschel and raised in Williamsburg. She graduated from Elk Rapids High School, carrying with her a strong sense of community, compassion, and just the right amount of spirited determination.
That determination—and a whole lot of heart—would define her life.
With her fiery red curls, a smile that could light up any room, and a laugh that was truly infectious, Brenda had a presence you didn't forget. She was the kind of person who made strangers feel like old friends and who showed up—fully and fiercely—for the people she loved.
She shared 40 wonderful years of marriage with her husband, David Goerke, and was a deeply devoted mother to her daughter, Ashley. Her love for her family was unmatched—steady, generous, and always just a little bit protective in the way only the best moms are.
Brenda built a meaningful career in real estate, eventually serving as President of the Dearborn Board of Realtors. But to her, it was never just about buying or selling houses—it was about helping people find their place in the world. She had a special place in her heart for helping others, especially the elderly, always taking the extra time to listen, to guide, and to make sure they felt comfortable and cared for during life's big transitions.
She made her home for many years in Dearborn, where she built lasting friendships and a reputation for kindness, honesty, and a willingness to go above and beyond.
Outside of work, Brenda's heart extended to every creature in need. She was an avid animal lover who welcomed many rescue dogs and cats into her home over the years. Each one was treated like family—because to her, they were.
And then there was the baking.
Brenda was, without question, the kind of baker people talk about. Known lovingly as "Mrs. Cookie" or "the cookie lady," she brought joy to countless people through her creations. Whether it was a holiday, a gathering, or just an ordinary Tuesday, Brenda had a way of making it special—often with something warm from the oven. She especially loved learning and laughing alongside friends in baking classes at Zingerman's Bakehouse, where she combined her passion for baking with her love of connection.
More than anything, Brenda had a gift: she made people feel cared for. Truly cared for. Whether through a conversation, a kind gesture, a perfectly timed joke, or a plate of cookies, she showed her love in ways both big and small—and she did it wholeheartedly.
She is survived by her beloved husband, David Goerke, and her daughter, Ashley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jane and Maynard Hentschel.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 26, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at John N. Santeiu Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, March 27, at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of the Divine Child.
Brenda's legacy is one of love, laughter, and generosity. She gave so much of herself to others—her time, her energy, her warmth, and yes, her cookies. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever present in the lives she touched.
