Brian L. Cox, born on August 14, 1957, to William C. and Evelyn J. Cox, passed away surrounded by the family he cherished above all else. The third of five children, he was raised in Phoenix, Arizona, where the foundation of his lifelong devotion to family, discipline, and adventure was formed. He graduated from Arcadia High School in 1975.
Brian’s greatest joy was his family. He shared 45 years of marriage with his wife, Hani, and together they raised three children—Frank, Julie, and Barry. He was also a proud grandfather to four grandchildren: Makena, Ellie, Carter, and Nolan. Brian had a soft spot for animals and adopted and rescued multiple pets, each one becoming a part of the Cox family. His devotion extended far beyond his immediate family; he was a constant, supportive presence in the lives of his many nieces and nephews, never missing an opportunity to cheer them on.
His guidance led several of his children, nephews, and grandchildren to follow in his footsteps by serving their country across every major branch of the U.S. Armed Forces—Air Force, Army, Marines, and Navy.
Brian embraced the outdoors with passion. He spent his earlier years rappelling, skydiving, flying, and exploring the outdoors. He backpacked the Appalachian Trail and the Smoky Mountains and frequently flew to different Hawaiian islands to explore and backpack with friends. For nearly six decades, he shared hunting and fishing adventures with his best friend, Craig Smith. With his children, he pursued their interests wholeheartedly, from martial arts—earning a black belt in Uechi-Ryu with Frank—to years spent supporting and playing hockey with Barry. For Brian, family wasn’t just important; it was his driving purpose.
In March 1978, Brian joined the United States Air Force, beginning a distinguished military career. He first served as a recip mechanic on O-2 Skymasters, stationed at Wheeler Field, Hawaii, where he also earned his pilot’s license. Subsequent assignments brought him to Shaw AFB in South Carolina—where he met Hani, the love of his life—and later to Robins AFB in Georgia.
Brian later became a Flight Engineer, completing school at Altus AFB, Oklahoma. His first assignment on C-141s as a flight engineer took him to Norton AFB in California, where he flew missions throughout the Pacific Theater.
He then transitioned into jet engine maintenance, working on several fighter platforms. His assignments included:
F‑4s and F-15s at Kadena AFB in Okinawa, Japan
F‑16s, where he served as Propulsion Flight Programs Manager for the 56th Fighter Wing at Luke AFB in Arizona.
In 1995, Brian retired early as a Master Sergeant, choosing to prioritize remaining in Phoenix with his family—a decision that reflected his commitment to those he loved.
Throughout his service, Brian earned several major commendations, including the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal (four devices), and the NCO Professional Military Education Ribbon. He proudly served in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
After his military service, Brian embarked on a second career in law enforcement until retiring in 2017.
He is survived by his mother, Evelyn; his wife, Hani; his sons, Frank and Barry; his daughter, Julie; his brothers, William and Robert; and his sister, Carol. He was predeceased by his father, William, his brother, Barry, and his grandson, Carter.
Brian will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, loyal friend, and selfless servant to his country and community. His legacy lives on through the family he treasured, the friendships he forged, and the countless lives he touched with his generosity, humor, and unwavering support.
Rest peacefully, Dad, until we’re reunited in the joy of heaven.
