Bruce Denton Cox (81), of Rockville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a devoted husband and a steady, protective presence whose quiet strength defined the life he lived.

Bruce was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and long-time friend. He was the son of Ernest Cox (originally from Manchester, England) and Elsie Wharton Cox (originally from Liverpool, England), and grew up in Hempstead, New York, where he attended Uniondale High School. He later studied at the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in Glen Cove, New York, an experience he remained proud of throughout his life. He went on to earn his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. Bruce was a highly respected hydrodynamicist and propeller designer, working with Electric Boat and the David Taylor Model Basin, and later operating his own company, Hydrodynamics Research.

Bruce shared 30 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Karen Marie Cox. Their life together was built on commitment, resilience, and a bond that endured through every chapter. Karen often recalled that her mother once said, “God made you and matched you.” Thirty years later, their life together proved that to be true.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Karen Marie Petrlik Cox; their children, Nicholas Denton Cox (21), Angela Marie Cox (19), and Christopher Bruce Cox (19); his son, Howard Cox Whitehead (52); and his sister, Deborah Barnum, her husband Starr Barnum, and their children, Jessica and Starr. He also leaves behind extended family and many friends whom he cherished and loved.

Bruce was a constant and watchful presence in his family’s life, offering support, protection, and care in his own steady way. Those who knew him understood his reserved nature, his intelligence, and the quiet ways he showed care and loyalty. He was a man of consistency and strength, whose presence was steady and enduring.

He maintained friendships across many stages of his life, from early school years through adulthood, and especially valued the time spent with his pool friends, with whom he played regularly until recent years. He enjoyed spirited conversations about politics and intellectual ideas, had a deep appreciation for 1960s music and doo-wop, and remained a loyal fan of the Redskins and the Yankees. He took pride in the details of life, from his love of BMWs to the unique experience of co-owning a racing horse, “Idiot’s Delight.” Though reserved by nature, Bruce’s presence was steady and observant, and when he genuinely laughed, his smile was unforgettable and infectious.

In lieu of flowers, and if you are able, please donate to the American Cancer Society (donate.cancer.org) in Bruce’s name in hopes of advancing a cure for this disease that affects so many.

A Memorial Celebration to honor Bruce’s life will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2026, from 2:00–5:00 PM at the Saddle Ridge Community Center, 300 Saddle Ridge Circle, Rockville, Maryland 20850.

Bruce’s memory will live on in the family he loved, those who love him, and in the lives he touched. May God bless Bruce and all those who love him.
