Dr. Bruce H. Short, 74, passed away on December 22, 2025, in Olathe, Kansas. A devoted physician, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Bruce lived a life marked by compassion, intellect, and unwavering dedication to both his profession and his family.
Born on April 26, 1951, in Hammond, Indiana, Bruce was the son of Sterling and Evelyn Short. He grew up with a deep curiosity about the world around him and a strong sense of purpose that would guide him throughout his life. After graduating from Fredonia High School, he pursued higher education at the University of Kansas, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. His passion for helping others led him to continue his studies at the University of Kansas School of Medicine where he earned his degree as a Doctor of Medicine, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine.
Bruce's medical career was distinguished by excellence and integrity. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians a testament to his skill and dedication in the field of medicine. Patients and colleagues alike admired him not only for his clinical expertise but also for his warmth and genuine concern for others.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bruce was a joyous and loving presence in the lives of those who knew him. He shared a beautiful life with his wife Mary Jane and took immense pride in their children: William Christopher (Karyna), Jennifer Morgan, and Philip Alexander (Becca). His role as "Granddaddy" brought him particular joy—he cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren. Bruce is also survived by his brothers and sister: Wayne (Mary), Debra (Steve) and Brad (Barb).
Bruce had a lifelong love for classic cars and computers and found great happiness in sharing these interests with others. He also loved a good joke, good book and good conversation.
He will be remembered as an extraordinary doctor whose compassion touched countless lives; as an intellectual who never stopped learning; as a man whose laughter filled rooms; and as a steadfast friend whose kindness left lasting impressions.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to share in his remarkable journey. A Service will be held on June 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Village Presbyterian Church 6641 Mission Road Prairie Village, KS 66208.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Bone Marrow Transplant Treatment unit at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
