Bryce Warren Roberts, a man of profound curiosity, adventurous spirit, and a deep love for the natural world, passed away on February 11, 2026.

Born on April 27, 1949, in New York, Bryce was the first child of Warren and Lora Roberts. His father's career as a pilot for Pan American World Airways eventually brought the family to the San Francisco area in 1952. Bryce grew up in a vibrant Los Altos neighborhood, spending summer afternoons playing softball with friends and neighbors and finishing up the day with root beer floats at the local A&W.

A 1967 graduate of Homestead High School (the same alma mater as tech pioneers Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak), Bryce was an active youth involved in Scouting, Track & Field, and various community groups.

Before pursuing his college degree, Bryce followed his wanderlust spirit to explore the world. His travels took him through Australia and New Zealand, as well as to the rugged landscapes of Alaska. His early professional life was spent outdoors, working with the Forest Service in Northern California and the BLM in Eastern Nevada.

Bryce's innate curiosity eventually led him to carve out a unique professional niche. After observing technicians using underground equipment to locate blockages in water lines, he became fascinated by the trade. He researched the manufacturers of the equipment, took classes to learn the operations and founded "Scout Locating," a successful business built on

his signature tagline: "Know what's below before you dig". Through his work, he became a "go-to" expert for homeowners and contractors, and forged lasting partnerships and friendships.

Bryce was a man of many talents and interests. He was a dedicated musician who loved jamming on both acoustic and electric guitars with friends, and a devoted reader with an expansive library of books on various topics. He was also an avid outdoorsman with a passion for falconry and birds of prey, frequently attending hawking events and connecting with fellow falconers.

His love for travel continued throughout his life, taking him to Italy, and then fishing excursions on the banks of the American river near Auburn, and to Baja Mexico, Florida Keys, Belize, Alaska and Hawaii.

Above all, Bryce had a big heart. He is deeply missed by his longtime partner and the love of his life, Lynne Laney, who shared in his many adventures and passions.

He is also survived by his sisters, Becky Hunt, Davenport, Washington and Brenda Roberts, Salt Lake City, Utah; his nephews, Blaine Pickett, Gunnison, Colorado (and his wife MJ and their 2 children, Maeve and Warren) and Brett Pickett, Grand Junction, Colorado; and his nieces, Alexandra Winkler, Salt Lake City, Utah and Jocelyn Winkler, Oakland, California.

Rest in Peace, Bryce.
