Adiane Bunny Chilcoat (nee Higbee) passed away peacefully after a short illness on March 11, 2026, at age 86, surrounded by family members.
Born on New Year's Day, 1940, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Bunny arrived in the world with a distinction that suited her perfectly — she was the first baby born in Nebraska that year. From her very first moment, she made quite the entrance.
Bunny grew up and attended school in Seneca, Kansas, graduating from Seneca Public High School before going on to William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri. She later transferred to the University of Nebraska Lincoln, where she majored in English and Business and served as president of her Alpha Chi Omega pledge class — a role that hinted at the leader and community builder she would become.
In 1960, she married the love of her life, Ron Chilcoat, and together they built a warm, fun-filled home in Kansas where kitchen-table games of Michigan Rummy, Hearts, and Cribbage were a beloved family-and-friends ritual.
Bunny raised her two sons while working part-time, and was a devoted presence in their lives — volunteering with the PTA and cheerfully chaperoning countless field trips. After her boys left the nest, she and Ron traveled, savoring their adventures from coast to coast.
Bunny's generous spirit found a meaningful home at the Alzheimer's Association, where she began as a volunteer and rose to serve as Executive Director of the Greater Kansas City chapter — a role she embraced with dedication and heart. She later became the Executive Director of the Johnson County Mental Health Association. She was also active with the American Heart Association and the Alpha Chi Omega Alumni Association. A devoted pet lover, she gave generously to and adopted from animal rescue organizations throughout her life.
At home, Bunny's hands were rarely idle. She was an avid knitter and cross-stitcher, and her children and grandchildren treasure the many pieces she made especially for them. She adored animals, particularly her cats, and her bridge groups and the Red Hat Society brought her joy and friendship for many years.
Bunny is survived by her brother William Higbee; her two sons Brad Chilcoat (Rich Walker) and Kevin Chilcoat (Amanda); her granddaughters Kayla Lemmon (Jack) and Courtney Rainey (Dustin); and four great-grandchildren who will grow up knowing her name and her legacy. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ron in 2002, and her parents, Cleo Lou "Star" Higbee and Homer Aaron "Duke" Higbee.
The family will hold a private service later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bunny's memory may be made to the Lawrence (KS) Humane Society.
