Carl Young

1941 - 2025

Carl Howard "Joe" Young passed away peacefully on December 12, 2025, in Pembroke, Massachusetts, at the age of 83. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Carl now joins his beloved wife Barbara F. (Ellis) Young; his mother Lillian (Hunter) Young; his father Claude Young; and his sister-in-law Roberta (Ellis) Todd in the grace of God.

Born on December 16, 1941, Carl was raised in Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1971, he moved to Pembroke where he and Barbara built a warm and loving home together. Married in 1964, Carl and Barbara shared a life filled with joy and adventure as they raised their three sons. Known for their family camping trips and dedication as Boy Scout Troop leaders, Carl and Barbara created a nurturing environment grounded in kindness and affection.

Carl worked as a home remodeler and carpenter before retiring. He was widely respected for his skilled craftsmanship and tireless work ethic. Whether restoring a home or building a birdhouse with his grandchildren, Carl approached every task with care and precision.

A man of many passions, Carl had a deep appreciation for classic cars and loved exploring the scenic backroads of New Hampshire and Maine. He found joy in simple pleasures—driving through the countryside, caring for stray dogs as if they were his own, and sharing laughter with friends. He was an active member of the Pembroke Dull Men's Group, where he valued camaraderie and connection.

The South Shore YMCA in Hanover held a special place in Carl's heart. A daily swimmer and committed volunteer, he generously gave his time to help others—offering assistance during workouts or lending support during swim lessons. His presence there was marked by quiet encouragement and a willingness to serve.

Carl is survived by his three sons: Carl "Butch" Young Sr. and his wife Rhonda of Plymouth; Bill Young and his wife Melissa of Uxbridge; and Steven Young of Lakeville, whose loving wife Shellie passed away in 2023. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Stephanie, C.J., Zachary, Christian, Jordan, Angela, Jamie, Bruce, Dena, Chantelle, James, and Todd. Carl never missed an important moment in their lives—whether it was a game or a milestone celebration—and was always their biggest cheerleader.

He is also survived by his brothers Peter Young of Quincy; James Young and his wife Carolyn of Yarmouth; his sister Lillian Cincotta of Weymouth; sister-in-law Sandy Ellis and her husband Jerry of Middleborough; sister-in-law Anita Nagle of Pennsylvania; sister-in-law Joan Kinney of Bridgewater; and brother-in-law Robert Ellis and his partner Priscilla of Londonderry, New Hampshire. Carl is further remembered by many loving nieces and nephews who were touched by his warmth and generosity.

Among the many joys he shared with his family was building projects with his sons and grandchildren. Known as the expert birdhouse specialist—and the mastermind behind some of the fastest derby cars in Boy Scout races—Carl delighted in creating lasting memories through hands-on time together.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date to honor Carl's memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Shore YMCA at ssymca.org or mailed to South Shore YMCA, 79 Coddington Street, Quincy, MA 02169.

Carl Howard "Joe" Young will be remembered for his kindness, quiet strength, love of the open road, and unwavering devotion to those he held dear. His legacy lives on in every life he touched—with each handcrafted gift built from love and every cheer offered from the sidelines.
