Carleen R. Best, age 89, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born in San Antonio to Carl and Lula Williams-Neindorf.
Carleen was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished and loved her family, friends and her faith in God. She was happily married to Joseph Best (an aerospace engineer at Kelly Air Force Base), for 35 years until his passing. They would often country dance together. They had three daughters, and one grandson. Carleen loved her church community. She attended weekly services and Bible studies, volunteered providing comforting meals with a warm smile of comfort and support. She was always very positive and sweet to everyone she met. Her beautiful smile always lit up the room.
Carleen loved cats and kids. She found joy in being outdoors, surrounded by her beloved pets, attending to her garden and loved feeding the birds. A creative spirit, she enjoyed sewing her own clothes and handmade unique pot holders. Loved constant beachcombing for shells, and collecting rocks. Her adventurous nature led her on road trips with friends and relatives across the country, which included memorable visits to Alaska and Hawaii. Carleen delighted in growing tangerine trees from seed, and listening to Elvis Presley songs so much it drove people crazy. Her cheerful demeanor and generous heart left a lasting impression on everyone she meet and she never met a stranger.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph; her daughters Pamela Jean and Melba Jo; and her three sisters, Gary Svalberg, Kittisue Bell, and Margaret Frost-Birnbaum. Carleen is survived by her daughter Janet and husband John Gilbert; her grandson Richard Kevin; and many other family members and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
A Memorial Service celebrating Carleen’s life will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Good News Lutheran Church, 11020 Old Corpus Christi Hwy, San Antonio, Texas 78223. A light lunch will follow the service. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
