Carmen Beverley Zapien, 58, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, in Bellingham, Washington, after a year-long illness, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on February 10, 1967, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, to Beverley and Richard Braun, Carmen spent her early years moving between various places before ultimately settling in Washington. She graduated from Lynden Christian School and later pursued travel agent training. However, it was in the world of photography that she found her professional calling. Carmen dedicated over 30 years as a photo lab technician at the Costco photo lab, where her commitment and attention to detail left a lasting impression on colleagues and customers alike.
Carmen's life was deeply rooted in family and love. She is survived by her devoted husband, Ray Zapien; her sons, Trevor Saxton and Kyler Saxton; her siblings Juanita Braun (and husband Randy), Robbie Braun (and wife Jamie), and Tasha; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. Her two beloved dogs, Dezi and Duckie, were constant companions who brought her immense joy.
A woman of warmth and generosity, Carmen had a passion for cooking and took great pride in hosting family gatherings. Her home was often the heart of celebrations—filled with laughter, delicious food, and the comfort of togetherness. Her love for animals was profound, especially dogs, and she extended that compassion to all creatures.
A public viewing was held at Whatcom Cremation and Funeral Home in Bellingham, Washington.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Whatcom Humane Society in honor of Carmen's enduring love for animals.
