Carmetta Maria “Petey” Cunningham (Cohill)September 30, 1952 – March 22, 2026
Carmetta Maria Cunningham, known to everyone who loved her as “Petey,” passed away on March 22, 2026, at the age of 73. She lived in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was proudly from Gary, Indiana.

Petey accepted Christ at an early age, and her faith remained a steady part of her life.

She spent nearly 30 years working at the Gary Housing Authority, where she built meaningful relationships and became a familiar, trusted presence over the years.
She loved her family deeply, and her grandchildren were everything to her. If you ever had the chance to sit at her table, you already know—Petey could cook. It was one of the ways she showed love, and she did it effortlessly.

Petey was funny, sharp, and unapologetically real. She never sugarcoated, and you never had to guess where you stood with her—but underneath that honesty was someone who loved hard, protected her people, and stayed true to who she was at all times. That’s what made her special.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Irene Cunningham; her grandmother, Elizabeth Cunningham; her sisters, Jeanette Holmes and Maria Cannon; her brothers, Winston Cunningham and Donald Cannon; and her grandson, Reuben Burns.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Dante Burns and Tracey (Daryl) Dotson; her sister, Denise Neal; her grandchildren, Jaylen (Korrie) Asberry, Kaleb Dotson, and Lauryn Dotson; her great-grandchildren, Damien Burns and Jordyn Asberry; and many other relatives and loved ones who will carry her memory forward.

Visitation Friday, April 3, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with funeral services immediately following at 11:00 a.m. All service at Freeman’s Temple Church of God in Christ in Gary, Indiana.715East 45th Avenue Gary, Indiana 46409. Interment Evergreen Memorial Park.
