Carol May Johnson passed away peacefully on Friday January 2, 2025, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of love, intelligence, warmth, and devotion to her family and friends.
Born August 2, 1941, Carol was a caring mother, cherished spouse, and proud grandmother and great grandmother whose life was defined by her deep commitment to those she loved. Carol lived most of her life in Albuquerque, NM but spent the last 4 years in Littleton, CO near her family.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Susan Gonzales, and by her spouse, Steve, with whom she shared a life filled with companionship and care. She is also lovingly remembered by her granddaughters Melissa Olson (husband Ben Olson) and Emily Gonzales, who were a deeply cherished part of her life, and by her great-granddaughters, Veda and Aella, who brought her immense joy and pride. She is also survived by her younger sister, Mary Moeller who lives in California with her husband Paul.
Carol was known for her terrific sense of humor, genuine kindness, and warm personality. She truly enjoyed talking with people, and many loved speaking with her and found comfort, laughter, and connection in her conversations. Her devotion to her family and friends was unwavering, and she gave freely of her time, care, and love.
Carol was preceded in death by her husbands, Terry Proctor and Billy Johnson, by her beloved son, Kevin Proctor, her brother Tom Ball, and by her parents, who she cared for in their old age.
Carol was the eldest daughter born to Elizabeth “Betty” Ball Solnoky and Charles Wilbur Ball. She grew up in South Bend, Indiana with her younger brother Tom. Her Grandparents, Steven and Mary Solnoky (m. Emery), emigrated to the United States through Ellis Island from Hungary.
Her father Charles worked on airplane engines during WWII, and later moved the family to Buffalo, NY, Florida, Indianapolis, Oak Ridge, TN, when he worked for GE, before settling in Albuquerque, NM. Carol graduated from Sandia High School in 1958. Her Mom worked at Mosman and Gladden home builders in Albuquerque, NM and introduced her to her first husband who was a draftsman and home designer there.
She married Terry Proctor in 1959. They had two children, Susan Kay and Kevin Ray Proctor. A talented organizer, and avid volunteer, Carol frequently hosted events and volunteered at charities within her community in order to help those in need. A person of incredible resilience, Carol never shied away from learning new skills. After her first husband passed away suddenly in 1981, she enrolled at TVI majoring in data analytics and even led a support group teaching widows various home management skills, including how to repair items around the house.
A woman of remarkable intelligence, Carol worked for many years as a database administrator at Sandia National Laboratories, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she was respected for her dedication, and problem-solving abilities. She also got her pilots license and learned to fly small planes.
Carol married her second husband Billy Johnson in 1989, who passed away in 2016. They had a deep love for travel and enjoyed exploring destinations throughout the country during her retirement years. One of her most cherished experiences was traveling in an RV to Alaska, a trip she spoke of fondly and remembered with great joy. She also loved playing bridge, square dancing, reading, cross stitching, knitting, sewing and bead work, pursuits that reflected both her grace and sharp mind.
Carol will be remembered for her warmth, strength, brilliance, laughter, and loyalty. Her presence and friendship will be deeply missed, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
