Carol F. Winkelman passed away Nov 24, 2025, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
A graduate of Wausau High School, Ms. Winkelman earned a B.A. in literature and social science from the New School of Social Research and an M.A. in English from the University of California, Irvine. Her early career included teaching writing and serving as a certified EMT in Los Angeles before moving permanently to Chapel Hill, NC.
Ms. Winkelman had a long career as a freelance medical and travel journalist and writing consultant. She published a travel guide to Amsterdam (1991), a comprehensive guide on mid-life pregnancy (2002), and numerous articles. Her 1996 article on assisted reproduction won journalism awards and a Pulitzer Prize nomination. She taught scientific writing at several universities and led workshops on effective grant-proposal and research writing for early-career scientists at prominent research institutions. She also collaborated with a professional dance teacher to develop and run a dance and exercise program, based on principles of neuroplasticity, for people with Parkinson's Disease.
Carol loved horseback riding, traveling, and socializing with friends. She will be missed by many.
