It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Emily "Carole" Holland Jones on Monday, November 3, 2025, in Vancouver, Washington. Carole was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, daughter, sister, teacher, black cat lover, and friend whose warmth and dedication touched many lives.
Carole was born on April 14, 1946, in Hinton, West Virginia to James and Barbara Holland. When she was just one year old, her family relocated to Portland, Oregon after her father accepted a position with Union Pacific Railroad. This move marked the beginning of a lifelong connection to the Pacific Northwest—a region she would come to call home for much of her life.
A passionate advocate for education and lifelong learning, Carole pursued her academic goals with determination. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Washington State University and later completed a Master of Education at Lewis & Clark College in 1974. Her commitment to teaching led to an impactful career as a public school educator in both Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington. Over the years, she inspired countless students with her knowledge and compassion.
In March 1979, Carole married Richard Ellsworth Jones. Their marriage was filled with shared joys—hosting gatherings for friends and family, traveling to the coast for peaceful beach retreats, and cherishing time spent with their grandchildren. Throughout their 35-year union, they made homes in Portland OR; Vancouver WA; and Fountain Hills AZ—building lasting friendships wherever they went.
Carole's greatest joy came from her family. She is survived by her son Brian Jones; daughter-in-law Angie Jones; and grandchildren Cassidy Jones, Haley Scott, Max Jones, Ashley, and Cody. Her love for them was unwavering and evident in every moment shared together.
She was preceded in death by her parents James and Barbara Holland; her brother Paul Holland; and her husband Rick—each of whom held a special place in her heart.
A private service will be held in Portland, Oregon to honor Carole's life.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
