Cathy Shalhoub passed away peacefully at Loma Linda Medical Center on October 18, 2025, due to complications from kidney failure. She had her beloved brother Sam and her dear friend Steffanie John by her side. She was born in Los Angeles, to Mike and Maxine Shalhoub, the second of 4 children. Cathy was preceded in death by her father Mike, mother Maxine and brother Michael. She is survived by her sister, Virginia (DeeDee), her brother Sam, honorary sister Joyce, brother-in-law Greg as well as nieces and nephews, Sara, Mark, Gabe, Noah, Hunter, Samantha, Jerry and Alyssa. She is also survived by her great nieces: Leilani & Annabelle who were the apple of her eye.
After attending St. Alphonsus Elementary School and Sacred Heart of Mary High School, Cathy went on to study at East Los Angeles Junior College. She was active in the theatre there and spent many hours helping with productions. She went on to many creative pursuits, including stage makeup, commercial window dressing & jewelry making. However, her ultimate calling was to be a hairdresser, which she enjoyed for 35 years! Her clients & coworkers were her extended family. She loved her job.
Cathy struggled with health problems most of her life. She was diagnosed with diabetes in her late teens and went on to experience kidney failure in her late 30's. She was a courageous pioneer in the transplant arena and received an experimental kidney/pancreas transplant at Loma Linda in 1995. Although the kidney failed in 2005, the pancreas lasted her entire life. In 2005, she received a second kidney transplant and went on to live a full and active life. Through it all, she was strong and optimistic. Her willpower and dedication were a wonderment to us all over the years.
Beside her nieces and nephews, Cathy's greatest love was golf. She spent every available minute on the golf course. She had a handicap of 6, achieved 5 Holes in One and reveled in the accomplishment. Playing "skins with the guys" on Sundays was a ritual that brought her much joy. Her golf buddies were a part of her extended family that she loved.
Cathy has left a legacy of strength, optimism, and love, which will never be forgotten. She is greatly missed.
