Cecil Clifton Payne, age 75, of Sacramento, California, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026.
Cecil was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pauline Payne; his parents, Joseph and Kathleen Payne; and his brother, Joe Payne.
He is survived by his children, Frank (Jessica), Melissa (Joel), Kimberly (Jason), and Dorothy (Ben), as well as his brothers Kenny, Phillip, and Charles, who will remember him for his strength, his humor, his deep love for family, and his love for the Lord.
After the passing of his wife 18 years ago, Cecil stepped into a role that would become the greatest joy of his life, that of grandfather. Affectionately known as “Poppie” by his grandchildren, he became a steady and loving presence in their lives. He showed up in the everyday ways that mattered most, including rides to school, fishing trips, and plenty of fast food stops along the way, something his grandchildren certainly didn’t mind.
Cecil was incredibly proud of each of his grandchildren: Salem (Michael), Marin (Pete), Kyla (Ethan), Madelynn, Isabel, Zachary, Jacob, Ginger, Hudson, Joseph, and Penelope. After the loss of his wife, his grandchildren became an even greater source of joy in his life, and he cherished every moment he spent with them. He was also blessed and so proud to welcome his first great-grandchild, Fable Luke, into the family in August 2025.
He will be remembered for his quick sense of humor and the many words of wisdom he shared over the years, often while standing at the kitchen counter, out on the front porch, or relaxing in his bed. These simple moments of conversation, laughter, and advice are memories his family will carry with them always.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him, especially the grandchildren who proudly called him Poppie. His love, laughter, and guidance will continue to live on in the hearts of his family forever.
