Charles "Chuck" Edward Rohm, 90, died peacefully on November 16, 2025, from congestive heart failure, with his daughter Barbara by his side. Chuck was gracious, humble, and a man of faith—intellectual, kind, funny, competitive and deeply committed to giving his best to every part of his life. He was grateful for the opportunities he'd been given and pursued them with steady devotion.
Born on October 8, 1935, in Detroit to Bernice (Shook) and John T. Rohm, Chuck grew up in Indianapolis along with a sister, Lucinda, and his surviving brothers James and David. He graduated from Shortridge High School, was elected to Phi Betta Kappa, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Wabash College. He then completed a Master's degree in Actuarial Mathematics at the University of Michigan.
In 1956, Chuck married his high school classmate and lifelong partner, Joy Taylor Gwinn. They shared 51 years together before her death, and to Chuck, the marriage never ended. Their union was a partnership of two strong and able people who found, in one another, deep refuge and lifelong companionship. Together they raised two daughters, Elizabeth and Barbara, and walked through the profound loss of Elizabeth at age 18 with uncommon strength and love.
Chuck and Joy moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where Chuck devoted nearly four decades of his professional life to the Bankers Life Company—later The Principal Financial Group—retiring as Executive Vice President.
Chuck's professional career was punctuated by numerous accomplishments and honors. He earned the professional designation of Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in 1963, and became a member of the American Academy of Actuaries in 1965. He also earned the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designations. He taught CLU classes in economics and accounting for 10 years. He served nationally on the boards of LIMRA International and the Actuarial Foundation.
A devoted member of the Des Moines and central Iowa community, Chuck poured himself into service. He chaired the Simpson College Board of Trustees for three terms and served as a trustee for 20 years. He led the United Way of Central Iowa, supported the Des Moines Symphony, and served on boards dedicated to health care, families, education, and the arts. He was an ordained elder and member of the Session at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Chuck retired to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he became an active member of Mountain View Presbyterian Church.
Chuck is survived by his daughter Barbara, her husband Bradley Rossa, and two granddaughters--Anna Elizabeth and Ella Taylor Rossa. Chuck delighted in the light of his granddaughters and was immensely proud of both of them.
Chuck's life was marked by commitment—to family, to work done with integrity, and to the communities he loved. He leaves behind an enduring example of a life lived with purpose, gratitude, and grace.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 6, at 1 pm Mountain Standard Time. The service will be held at Mountain View Presbyterian Church, 8050 E. Mountain View Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85258, and will be live-streamed at: www.youtube.com/mtviewpres
