Charles J. Steiner passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026 in Gloucester, MA. at age 99.
Charles was born in St. Louis, MO in 1926 to Louis and Hannah Steiner, and graduated from Clayton High School in Clayton, MO in 1943, before serving in the Counter Intelligence Corp in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. In 1953, he married Nancy Stern, his beloved wife and companion of 55 years. Charles and Nancy raised their family in St. Louis, where Charles built a long successful career as an insurance consultant and had a wide circle of friends. He knew everyone, and everyone knew him. After his retirement in 2006, he and Nancy moved to Gloucester to be closer to family.
Devoted to Nancy, they enjoyed traveling together around the world, where Charles easily made friends wherever they went. He was easy-going, warm, welcoming, and witty, but his great gift as a conversationalist was as a listener, and was truly interested in what others had to say about their lives. Endlessly curious about the world, Charles was a voracious reader, engrossed in history and up to date on current events. He cherished relationships, conversations, a good book, trivia, and bingo, and after Nancy’s death left him a widower in 2009, he enjoyed the company of his "lady friends." He was thrilled when he became a grandfather and then a great grandfather, and was quick to reach out to family members to commemorate birthdays, holidays, and important events. He was adored by many and will be deeply missed.
Charles is predeceased by his wife, Nancy, his sister Lorraine Dreyfuss, and daughter-in-law Marilyn. He is survived by his children Dan Steiner and his wife Patti of Houston, TX, Susan Steiner and her husband Henry Ferrini of Gloucester, and his grandchildren, Laurie (Ross) Pickei, Scott (Lauren) Steiner, Isaac Steiner Ferrini, Zach (Marissa) Savrick and Carson (Katy) Savrick. His great grandchildren are Morgan and Tanner Pickei, Mason and Kennedy Steiner, and Eve, Stella, and Robbie Savrick.
