Charles Steven “Steve” Cooper, born October 25, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, passed away surrounded by love. He was the son of M. June Cooper and C. Edward Cooper, both of whom predeceased him.
Steve proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. During his service, he was stationed in Rhode Island, a place that would later become home. He lived in Portsmouth, Rhode Island for over 30 years, where he started his family and built a life grounded in dedication, hard work, and deep relationships.
After his military service, Steve graduated from Southern Massachusetts University with a degree in sales. He truly loved his work and found great joy in meeting and talking with people from all walks of life. His warmth, curiosity, and ease with others made lasting impressions wherever he went.
Steve was kind, a wonderful friend to many, and—by far—the most amazing father and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda Cooper; his daughters, Melanee Cooper Waters and Katherine Jones, his son, Paul Jones and Melanee’s husband, Michael Waters. He was a proud and deeply devoted grandfather to Mason Waters, Myles Waters, Sage Halverson, and Kayleigh Waters, whom he absolutely adored. His happiest days were often spent during summers in New Hampshire and Maine, visiting his grandchildren and enjoying time together.
Steve is also survived by his brother, Gary Cooper; Gary’s wife, Sue Cooper; and a cherished extended family including one niece, four nephews, and one great-nephew.
Steve will be remembered for his kindness, his loyalty, and the quiet, steady way he loved. His legacy lives on through his family, his friendships, and the many lives he touched simply by being himself.
A celebration of life and military funeral honors service will be held this summer in New Hampshire.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve’s memory to Operation Homefront, which supports military families.
There was nothing sweeter than Steve—except, perhaps, the cookies he always stashed away.
