Charlie Workman, 83, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on December 9, 2025, in his hometown.
Born on July 8, 1942, in Topeka to Charles D. and Frances P. Workman, Charlie spent his entire life rooted in the Topeka community. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1960 and went on to attend Washburn University. His strong work ethic and dedication led him to a long and successful career at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Over the course of 42 years, Charlie rose through the ranks—from tire builder to quality assurance supervisor—earning the respect of colleagues and gaining life-long friends.
Charlie's passion for lawn care began early in life when he started mowing lawns as a young man to earn extra money. What began as a simple job grew into a lifelong pursuit of the perfectly edged plot of weed-free grass. For over seven decades, Charlie transformed lawns into pristine landscapes—none more lovingly maintained than his own three-acre yard, which he tended meticulously for 50 years. His dedication also created summer employment opportunities for more than two dozen young people over the years.
Charlie's life was defined by both hard work and spirited play. A lifelong athlete, he was an avid golfer and bowler and played both fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, even to age 80. Over the years, Charlie and Lisa traveled to numerous states for the annual ABC Bowling Congress Tournament. His love for sports extended beyond participation; he was a devoted fan of KU, K-State, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Kansas City Royals. He also coached many of his kids' and grandkids' Optimist and little league teams over the years. Whether watching a game on TV with friends and family, or shouting from the sidelines, his enthusiasm was undeniable. Charlie also enjoyed many summers with his family at Tablerock Lake in the Ozarks, boating, waterskiing and tubing. He was happiest when he was outdoors.
Known for his larger-than-life personality, Charlie had a gift for livening up any room he entered. He loved to tease those around him with good-natured humor and reveled in being the center of attention. His presence brought energy and laughter wherever he went.
Holidays held special meaning for Charlie, but none more so than the Fourth of July. He took great joy in hosting grand celebrations complete with dazzling fireworks displays that welcomed all who wished to join in the festivities.
Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Lisa Workman; daughters Jennifer Quaney, Autumn Johannes (Mark), and Holly Workman; grandchildren Auston Coverson, Dawson Johannes, Alison Johannes, and Quincy Haines; great-grandchild Baby Johannes expected in March 2026; special surrogate grandchild Isabella Everett; sister Liz Murray; and brother Dan Workman.
He was preceded in death by his parents Charles D. and Frances P. Workman and sister Jackie Liske.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire laughter, love, and perfectly mowed lawns for generations to come. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Lighthouse Bible Church 4110 NW 62nd Street, Topeka, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Lighthouse Bible Church building fund.
