Christopher (Chris) Scott White, 49, of Culpeper, Virginia, was welcomed into the arms of his Savior on March 8, 2026, after bravely facing ALS with steadfast faith and remarkable courage.

Chris was born on March 10, 1976, in Syracuse, New York, to Scott and Patricia White. He was the beloved brother of Noal (Christina) White of Castorland, New York. Chris attended Faith Heritage School before graduating from SUNY Cortland.

Chris married the love of his life, Heidi Mertzeis, daughter of Bill and Debbie Mertzeis, on October 10, 2009. Their marriage was a beautiful reflection of devotion, faith, and a love that grew stronger through every season of life. Together they were blessed with two children, Braden and Addison, who were his greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. Through his marriage, Chris gained two more sisters and their spouses: Amy (Shane) Hinderliter and Wendy (Jon) Clemmer. Chris also had many nieces and nephews whom he adored.

Chris lived life with enthusiasm, kindness, and a heart fully devoted to God and his family. He was a beloved member of Mountain View Community Church, where he was warmly known as "Mr. Chris." With deep gratitude, Chris and his family cherished the unwavering love, prayers, and support their church family surrounded them with throughout his three-year journey with ALS.

For twenty-three years, he served as a physical education teacher, encouraging and inspiring students not only to be active, but also to believe in themselves. His love for sports and competition was a defining part of who he was. Whether playing, coaching, or refereeing, Chris brought energy, laughter, and a desire to compete wherever he went.

Those who knew Chris will never forget his bright smile, his quick humor, and the warmth he shared so freely. Even as ALS challenged him physically, it never touched his spirit. He radiated peace, resilience, and a deep joy rooted in his faith. Chris loved pointing others toward that same hope, often sharing mini-Jesus figures that reminded people of Jesus' love—even when words became difficult for him.

A celebration of Chris's life will be held at Culpeper Baptist Church in Culpeper, Virginia, on March 14 at 3:00pm. Chris was a casual man who wouldn't want anyone uncomfortable in a stuffy suit, so please come as you are or wear a jersey in his honor.

Chris kindly requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to help Heidi and the children continue building a life filled with meaningful moments and cherished memories together. In true Chris fashion, he would gently add that flowers, while beautiful, tend to bring his family more sneezes than smiles.
