Christopher was born to Emerson and Georgia Portis on October 17, 1962. He graduated from Roosevelt High School Class of 1982. He entered the United State Marine Corp in 1986 and served until 1989.
After the military, he worked security for ISM, and then with the Indiana Correctional Facility for a total of 30 "HARD" years, per Chris! After retirement he became an unofficial handyman and our constant call on companion.
Chris is proceeded in death by his parents, sister, Josie Mae Nichols and niece, Syreeda Candice Portis.
Survived by brother, Larry (Vanessa) Portis, sisters Annette and Camille Portis; nephews, Larry Nichols, Jr, Stephen (Shanavia) Portis, Christopher Burnett; nieces, Tilaya Portis, Jacinda (Douglas) Thames, LaDonna (Chris) Beal, and Shanetta Portis. Several great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Special friends, Donna DeBowles, Floyd Brown, Jr (JB) Mark Hubbard, his bowling and card buddies. He enjoyed playing cards, bowling and watching sports. Chris was loved by many and was always willing to help.
Visitation Friday, April 17, 2026, from 9:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. All services at the Guy & Allen Funeral Chapel, 2959 W 11th Ave., Gary, IN 46404. Interment Oak hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we would prefer you to donate to a charity of your choice in honor of Chris.
