Claire Collie Mitchell

1960 - 2026

Claire Collie Mitchell, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 65 after a courageous journey with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Claire was born on September 3, 1960, in San Antonio to Dr. Lamar Pitcher Collie Jr. and Lexie Margaret Stokes Collie. She lived a life defined by kindness, compassion, curiosity, and a spirit of adventure.

She was one of five children and is survived by three brothers: Rev. Robert A. Collie, Bryan D. Collie, and Bruce S. Collie. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Lamar Pitcher Collie III.

Claire graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in San Antonio as part of the Class of 1978. She attended Baylor University, where she met her future husband, Robert D. Mitchell III, in 1978. She later earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1983 and became a devoted registered nurse.

As a nurse, Claire was known for her compassion, calm presence, and deep dedication to the patients and families she served.

Her professional life also included leadership beyond healthcare. She served as First Lady of the American Cancer Society Foundation during her husband Rob’s tenure as President and later as president of Landshark Fitness in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Claire’s love for the outdoors was a defining part of her life. She became a certified Texas Master Naturalist and devoted many hours to conservation and environmental education throughout the Texas Hill Country.

A gifted athlete and enthusiastic adventurer, Claire enjoyed tennis, waterskiing, snow skiing, golf, hiking, and fly-fishing. She also loved gardening. Her appreciation for nature shaped many treasured family experiences through travel, sports, and exploring the landscapes of Texas and the American West.

Claire had a rare gift for making people feel welcomed and valued. She brought warmth, laughter, and loveliness to everyone she met.

Claire’s greatest joy was her family. She married Rob Mitchell on May 22, 1982, in San Antonio, and they shared more than 43 wonderful years together. She was a devoted mother to her four children: Meredith Sims (Patrick Sims), Fowler Mitchell (Courtney Bracco Mitchell), Lexie Mitchell (Luther Bangert), and Camille Mitchell.

She was a proud and loving grandmother to Madeline Sims (7), River Mitchell (7), and Nathan Sims (4). She was also surrounded by a large and loving extended family, including many nieces and nephews.

Claire will be remembered not only for her natural beauty, but for her joy, grace, loyalty, and authenticity. Her life touched countless people, and the memories she created will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Though Alzheimer’s gradually took pieces of her memory, it never diminished the love she gave or the love that surrounds her still.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Texas Master Naturalist Program or the Alzheimer’s Association to support research and awareness for early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

A celebration of Claire’s remarkable life will be announced at a later date.
