Cleveland "Skeeter" Christmas, 90, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, at the VA hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Born on May 8, 1935, in Hackensack, New Jersey, Cleveland lived a life woven with service, creativity, and a deep commitment to his family and community.
A veteran of the United States Army, Cleveland served his country from 1953 to 1956. His sense of duty extended beyond his military service into public service as a firefighter and through his many contributions to his community.
Cleveland pursued higher education with determination and passion. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey. He later graduated from Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Remarkably, he achieved these academic milestones while working full-time as a fireman for the city of Englewood, New Jersey—a testament to his unwavering work ethic and commitment to personal growth.
During Cleveland's career as a firefighter, he rose to the rank of Fire Lieutenant. His leadership and guidance left an indelible mark on those he mentored. Beyond his work as a firefighter, Cleveland extended his impact through roles like president of FMBA (Firefighters' Mutual Benevolent Association) and active involvement with organizations such as the Men of Blue, Urban League, NAACP, and the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Firefighters.
Even after retiring from firefighting, Cleveland continued to impact lives as a substitute teacher, sharing his passion for growth and learning with younger generations.
A man of multifaceted talents, Cleveland expressed himself through poetry and music. Whether performing his heartfelt works or playing the bongo and conga drums, he brought joy to those around him. He also enjoyed bowling and cherished spirited debates that reflected his lively intellect.
Cleveland is survived by his beloved wife Betty (née Marshall) Christmas; daughter Roxsann (Cleve) Chick; son Cleveland A. Christmas; grandson Michael (Charlene) Chick; step-granddaughter Sharon Brown; great-grandchildren Alanah Chick and Quentin Chick; sister Gwendolyn Ash; and brother Arnold (Fran) Christmas; as well as numerous other relatives and friends who will remember him fondly.
He was predeceased by his parents John Earl Christmas Sr. and Carolyn (née Alston) Christmas; siblings John Earl Christmas Jr., Vincent Christmas, Joyce Burgess-Lee, Martina Christmas, and Gerald Christmas.
