Clifton Mitchell died from cancer on January 21, 2026 at The Mooring at Lewes retirement community in Delaware at the age of 87. Cliff was born on November 13, 1938 to George Hunt Mitchell and Margaret Coons Mitchell. He grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland and enjoyed sports, and singing in the choir at the Washington cathedral while attending St. Albans School. He graduated from Washington and Lee University and served five years in the Navy as a supply corps officer. He then continued his studies at the Wharton school of Business where he met and married Mary Pritchard (Mitchell) in 1967. Cliff worked as an accountant and comptroller spending most of his career at the Brookings Institute in Washington DC. He and Mary raised two sons in Bethesda, Maryland; Clifton Jr (Mitch) and James (Jimmy). He was a great husband and father who enjoyed tossing a ball around with his boys, taking them to Redskins and Orioles games, and coaching Jimmy's soccer team. Cliff provided for his family, while setting a good example through his quiet dedication and solid work ethic. He enjoyed 25 years of retirement splitting time between his "red house" in Ocean View, Delaware; and his summer home in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. As Cliff's physical condition declined, he remained a happy and friendly man, who enjoyed greeting friends and strangers on morning trips to the Bethany Beach boardwalk, and the Liverpool Nova Scotia Emera Centre gym. He was always quick to offer a smile. Cliff is survived by his wife, sons, daughters in law (Vicki Geiger Mitchell and Maria Palladino Mitchell), six grandchildren (Nick, Zack, Tori, Kira, Cooper, and Sammie), beloved older brother, Dr. George Mitchell, and George's children Hunt and Julie. There will be a remembrance for him on Feb. 21st at The Moorings at Lewes from noon to two o'clock.
