Cynthia "Sinky or Cynt" Onukogu (née Rowell), a devoted mother, grandmother, and lifelong advocate for faith and education, passed away on October 4, 2025, in Livingston, New Jersey. She was 76 years old.

Born on October 2, 1949, in Marion, South Carolina, Cynthia was the beloved daughter of Ethylene Jones (née Rowell) and the late David H. Rowell. Her early years were marked by determination and resilience. Despite academic struggles as a child, Cynthia's tenacity never wavered. She often stayed up late into the night studying, determined to succeed. When a high school guidance counselor told her she wasn't college material, Cynthia refused to accept that fate. Encouraged by a classmate to apply to Douglass College at Rutgers University, she not only gained admission but went on to earn her bachelor's degree—becoming the second person in her family to do so after her maternal uncle Marvin Jones.

Inspired by her uncle's path in social work and driven by a deep desire to help others, Cynthia pursued graduate studies at Rutgers University and earned her Master's in Social Work. Her academic journey was not just a personal triumph but also a testament to her unwavering spirit. Cynthia went on to spend 32 years as a school social worker for Newark Public Schools.

While attending Douglass College, Cynthia formed one of the most enduring friendships of her life with Barbara Wilson-Whitaker. The two met while working together in the college dining hall and remained best friends for over fifty-five years. Their bond was filled with shared laughter, countless shopping trips, and mutual support through every chapter of life.

During graduate school, Cynthia met Donatus Onukogu. They married and welcomed their daughter Donna into the world—a name that held special meaning for Cynthia. When she was born, her father David was serving in the Korean Conflict and had sent word that he wanted his daughter named Donna. However, Ethylene chose the name Cynthia instead. Years later, Cynthia honored that original wish by naming her own daughter Donna.

Cynthia's faith was central to her life from an early age. At just 12 years old, she began attending Mt. Zion Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.) at the invitation of childhood friend Linda Allred Boone. That first step into spiritual life sparked a lifelong devotion to Christ that would influence many around her—including family members who followed her example into church life.

As an adult member of Bethlehem C.O.G.I.C., Cynthia served faithfully as a Deaconess, Bible Study Teacher, and member of the church board. Her love for scripture and commitment to service were evident in all she did within the church community. Her favorite hymn was "His Eye is on the Sparrow."

Outside of her professional and spiritual pursuits, Cynthia found joy in simple pleasures: reading the Bible daily, participating in church activities, crocheting intricate patterns by hand, crafting jewelry with care and creativity, and spending cherished time shopping with Barbara. Always interested in learning, in her sixties, Cynthia even tried zip lining.

Cynthia is survived by her loving mother Ethylene Rowell; devoted daughter Donna; cherished grandson David; and a host of cousins near and far who will remember her strength and warmth. She was predeceased by her father David H. Rowell and former husband Donatus Onukogu.

Cynthia's life stands as a powerful reminder that perseverance can overcome doubt—and that faith can light even the darkest paths. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
