Dan Loyd Funderberg

Dan Loyd Funderberg passed away at his home in Houston, Texas just weeks shy of his 91st birthday.

Dan was born on April 26, 1935, in Mission, Texas to Beatrice and William A. Funderberg. He graduated from Pan American College, now known as the University of Texas-Pan American, with an accounting degree in 1957. Upon graduation, he entered the United States Marine Corps, where he served his country for two years. Shortly after his discharge, Dan met a beautiful young woman named Patricia Unland, who four months later would become his wife on February 6, 1960. Two children followed in quick succession. Dan, Jr. was born in 1961, and Margaret came along 11 months later in 1962. Dan and Pat recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.

The young family moved from the Rio Grande Valley to Corpus Christi in 1964, where Dan embarked on a career with Coastal Corporation. The family relocated to Houston when the company moved its headquarters there in 1974. Dan worked there for another 12 years, and upon his retirement from corporate life, he began a second chapter in accounting for not-for-profit organizations. He worked for many years providing accounting and financial expertise to his beloved church, Northwest Memorial Baptist Church, and subsequently at KETH-TV in Houston. In 2015, Dan was recognized by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy for practicing for 50 years as a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Texas.

Throughout his life, Dan's passion was service in ministry to God and his church. He served as a deacon at every church he attended, guided many church finance committees, and volunteered countless hours serving others in the community. Later, Dan became a loving grandfather, known as Poppy, and was passionate about his grandchildren, attending as many school concerts, sporting events, and programs as he could.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; his brother; his son, Dan L. Funderberg, Jr. ("Danny"); and his grandson, Joshua Funderberg. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Unland Funderberg; his daughter, Margaret Funderberg, her husband, Jeffrey McMahon, and their children, Kate and Tim McMahon. He is also survived by his grandson, Jeremy Funderberg, and his great-grandson, Gavin Funderberg.

The family wishes to thank Dan's caregivers, Dottie, Princess, Dorcas, and Gigi, who cared for him during his later days.
