Daniel A. Burgard, age 93, of Erie, MI, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2026, surrounded by his family while in a rehabilitation stay at Hickory Ridge of Temperance. He was born on March 8, 1932, to Ross and Hattie (Stock) Burgard. He was third of 11 children and grew up in Erie. Dan was a graduate of Central Catholic High school (Toledo) and worked for a time in road construction and was employed by Neo Products (Erie) before proudly serving in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. After his return from military service, he resumed employment with Neo Products for five years.
Dan married Mary Ann Sabin on September 12, 1959, at Nativity Catholic Church (Toledo). They made their home in Erie and welcomed a son, Daniel, and daughter, Lynette. Dan was a member of UAW Local 14 and worked as a Machine Repairman at the General Motors Chevrolet Plant in Toledo, retiring in 1992 after 33 years. While working for General Motors, he supplemented his income for a few years by driving a school bus for Mason Consolidated Schools.
Dan was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church (Erie), Erie Knights of Columbus, Monroe Rod & Gun Club, and the Erie VFW Post. He enjoyed working in his yard, hunting, vacationing in the south, and walking the Mackinaw Bridge over many Labor Day weekends. Annual summer vacations were always fun times that his family of four looked forward to.
Dan is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, of 66 years; son, Daniel (Sherri) Burgard; daughter, Lynette (Rex) Semler; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, David (Marilyn) and Dale; two sisters, Sr. Mary Kent SND and Susan (Robert) Darmofal; sister-in-law, Beverly Burgard; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents; sisters, Sr. Mary Ross, Sr. Mary Dale, Sr. Mary Marc SND, Madeline Ausmus, and Florence Hilkens; brother, Martin; brothers-in-law, Homer Ausmus and Tom Hilkens; one niece, and three nephews.
In honoring Dan's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service as he has donated his body to the Anatomical Donation Program at UTMC. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
