Daniel Hungerford, father, brother, son, friend, hard worker, sports fan, runner, bike rider, early riser, City Water Distribution Supervisor died sadly after a long and courageous battle with various serious health conditions. He was 83 at the time of passing.
Daniel was born April 2, 1943 in San Francisco, CA to Louis and Marie Hungerford. He was raised in Soquel with his sister Judy Hungerford. His mom, Marie came from a Soquel pioneer family. His father was from Lake Arthur, Louisiana. Daniel grew up at the family home in Soquel, CA.
Daniel went to Santa Cruz High School. He loved sports and was a standout in football and track. He would first meet his future wife Carla Schutte there. Daniel also played football at Cabrillo College and studied business there.
From 1965 to 1971 Daniel served in the Army National Guard. He did basic training in Louisiana which brought him back to a place he had visited in his youth as his father would take the family back there to visit relatives.
In 1967 Daniel and Carla had a son, Steven. Daniel and Steven spent much time together practicing sports on local sports fields around Santa Cruz County. Daniel was always available even if he had a long and physical day at his job with the city of Santa Cruz Water Department. Daniel's arm was never too tired to throw batting practice to Steven or take him to a game and/or practice. They both shared a love for sports and working out. Many great moments were shared watching a boxing match or game. Many times Daniel's father Louis would join in watching sports.
Daniel enjoyed living in Soquel where he had a house in close proximity to the Soquel family home and lot where his mother and father lived and he grew up. He enjoyed helping his father out when his father needed care later in life. He also enjoyed projects helping his sister Judy. After he retired he took over the yard mowing and other duties at the Soquel home when his father could no longer do them.
Daniel had a long and successful career at the Santa Cruz Water Department. Daniel had over 40 years of service without even calling in sick. He was an iron man without ever having even a cold hold him back a day from work. He was well suited for the job as it let him be outside and physically active. The City gave him an award, along with the nickname "Redwood" and declared a day for him when he retired.
Daniel loved running and was a regular runner at various locations, including beach areas and local tracks. He would run for miles on end. As he got older he would replace running with more bike riding and would ride for hours from one end of the county and back. He introduced his son Steven to bike riding when he was young, one special riding spot was on old san jose road.
Daniel was a quiet man if you didn't know him. Never one to complain about things or want any attention. He had his ups and downs in life but he rarely showed it or let it stop him. Even through his health conditions during the final years of his life he was up for anything. He and his son enjoyed taking many cruises by the beach together in his final years This was one of Daniel's favorite activities and he was always happy to get outside even when his health was failing. Daniel will truly be missed. Daniel is survived by his son Steve and his wife Gladys, their daughter Ashley (grandchild) and Daniel's sister Judy.
