Daniel Richard Lumsden, at 60 years old, left this world in much the same way that he entered it... quietly and without much fanfare.
Born in Pontiac, Michigan, on April 3rd, 1965, to Norm and Sandy Lumsden, Dan was the namesake of both of his grandfathers. His innate ability to fix absolutely anything was a gift from his paternal grandfather, Richard Lumsden II, and his father. Unfortunately, that gift would eventually be outdone by the challenges passed down to him by his maternal grandfather, Wilbert Daniel Matheson.
Dan was a curious and adventurous child, and the only one in his immediate family with sparkling blue eyes. Although not completely feral, Dan moved through the world exactly the way he wanted to and without much forethought. His near-drowning experience, kidney transplant, and two heart surgeries reflected his challenges, highlighted his resilience, and fueled the family narrative that he had nine lives.
Despite those challenges, Dan was an excellent golfer whose talents easily put him in the top 5-10% of recreational golfers. He was also a prolific sportsman. He was so passionate about both hobbies that oftentimes he would play hooky from work to go golfing or hunting. Whether it was bow and arrow or rifle season, Dan rarely walked out of the woods without tagging a deer. He loved to be on the golf course or in the woods, and these were the times that Dan felt most connected to family and friends — especially his dad, brother Bill, and cousin Steve.
Dan felt loved in many ways throughout his life. First and foremost, he was a momma's boy, and he wouldn't hesitate to let everyone know that he was his mother's favorite. His special childhood bond with his sister Dawn would last a lifetime and was carried forward by his little brother Bill and his wife Jodie (who he referred to as his hero) later in life. His cousins Miriam and Steve Balbaugh and Lee Ann and David Hazen were always available and willing to support Dan and that had a significant impact on his life.
Dan was a child at heart, and although he never had children of his own, he was able to share his childlike spirit with his nieces, nephews, and second cousins. His one true love was his wife, Diana. Her passing was devastating for him, and he never moved through the world in quite the same way after she was gone.
Dan's last few years were spent in the care of his dialysis nurses, techs, hospital nursing staff, and physicians. Even as demanding as he could be, there was something special about Dan that drew people to him. His family will be forever grateful for the comfort and love he received from his healthcare family, who went above and beyond.
Dan was preceded in death by both his parents, Norman Charles and Sandra Jean Lumsden, and the wife he adored, Diana Lumsden. He leaves behind his sister, Dawn Elaine Goers; his brother, William Duane Lumsden and wife Jodie Lynn Lumsden; and his cousin, Miriam Kay Balbaugh and her husband, Stephen Michael Balbaugh.
Special mention to his nieces, nephews, and second cousins, who he loved dearly.
