David McCarty Armstrong III, a devoted father and grandfather, accomplished avionics engineer, and proud veteran of the United States Coast Guard, passed away on February 10, 2026, in Atlanta, Georgia. Born on December 30, 1960, in Raleigh, North Carolina, David grew up in Roanoke, Virginia and lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his career, and his passions.
After graduating high school, David enlisted in the United States Coast Guard where he formed many lifelong friendships and began his career in avionics. Serving as an AT3 Aircrewman stationed at USCG Air Station Miami, he honed his avionics skills maintaining aircraft radio, radar, navigation systems, weapon systems, and experienced many wild adventures. During his service, he spent time aboard the USCGC WHEC-37 before her decommissioning in 1986. Known as "The Last Survivor of Pearl Harbor," the vessel now stands as a National Landmark and museum in Baltimore, Maryland—a testament to the history David was part of during his military tenure.
Following his honorable service in the Coast Guard, David transitioned into civilian aviation. He briefly worked for a small airline based in Mobile, Alabama before embarking on a remarkable near 26-year career with Northwest Airlines and later Delta Airlines after their merger. From September 1994 until his retirement in August 2020 as a Senior Avionics Engineer, David's expertise and commitment left an indelible mark on the aviation industry.
David's interests extended far beyond his professional life. He had a passion for hacking and computers that reflected his inquisitive mind and love for problem-solving. His fascination with airplanes endured throughout his life and was complemented by his love of his motorcycles and cars, of which he took meticulous care. Whether cleaning the pool or enjoying beer and sushi with loved ones, David found joy in both simple pleasures and complex pursuits. His fascination with genealogy showcased his appreciation for history and family heritage, and he could talk about his research for hours.
David is survived by his sons David Armstrong (Cayenne) of FL and Alex Armstrong (Cameron) of GA; stepdaughter Amanda Woodard of Georgia; step-grandson Brayden Woodard of GA; sister Janet McLaurin (Hugh) of Maryland; nieces Lauren Young of KS, Sarah Kibiloski of ID, Meryl Manske (Garrett) and Melissa Rhodes of NC; stepmother Elizabeth Armstrong; stepbrothers Mitch Lutz, Brady Lutz, and Bryan Lutz; aunts Betty Taylor (AW), Iva Jean Andrews, and Phyllis Townsend (Jim); cousins in VA and TX; and many beloved family members and friends. He was predeceased by his father David McCarty Armstrong Jr., mother Faye Sours Armstrong, stepson Adam Woodard, Juaneta and Merle Dean Mefford; beloved dog Sparky, and other cherished family members.
David's legacy is one of resilience and dedication- to his country through his military service, to aviation through decades of innovation and tenacity, and to those who knew him through countless shared memories. He will be missed dearly, especially in moments when his laughter is missing while watching his favorite movies.
