David Henry Frey, 80, passed away on December 18, 2025, in San Rafael, California. Born on September 8, 1945, in Indianapolis, Indiana, David led a life marked by creativity, intellect, and a deep commitment to both the arts and public service.
David earned his undergraduate degree in English from Indiana University in 1967 and a Master's degree in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley in 1974. This blend of literary insight and architectural precision would come to define much of his professional life.
Over the years, David wore many hats—each one reflecting his wide-ranging talents and interests. He began his career as a city planner for Cherry Hill Township in New Jersey. His keen eye for detail and concern for public safety led him to work as a fire fraud and safety inspector. He designed and sold scaffolding to construction companies. David also made significant contributions to the field of computer-aided design; he authored the widely used "AutoCAD: No Experience Required" series, published in multiple languages. He taught AutoCAD to architect firms throughout the Bay Area and at both San Rafael and Terra Linda high schools. His dedication to education extended beyond the classroom as he worked closely with special needs residents, offering guidance and support with compassion.
David found an outlet on stage at San Francisco College, where he acted in various productions. Through writing, teaching, designing buildings, or performing, he brought humor and intelligence to everything he did. Those who knew him remember his quick wit and resourcefulness.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Esther Kligman-Frey; his sister Virginia Griffis (David); sister-in-law Connie Frey; and nieces and nephews Michael Griffis (Molly), Ted Griffis (Nicole), Chris Frey (Leslie Calhoun), Jennifer Fowler (Rich), Elizabeth Walker (Jason), and Jessi Reaves (Zach Baker). He will be missed by many others, especially Esther's cousins living in Los Angeles, Montreal and Toronto.
David was preceded in death by father Hugh Watson Frey and mother Dorotha Applegate Frey; brother William H. Frey; and sister Jeanne E. Reaves.
A special thanks to Ace Tiro, his caregiver for the last eight years, the Adapted PE Program at the College of Marin, and the team of physical therapists at Kaiser.
