David Earl Kohl, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many, passed away peacefully at his home in Jacksonville, Florida on September 28, 2025, after a courageous five-year battle with ALS. He was 64 years old.
David was the kind of person who found joy in the simple things like being outside, listening to music, or laughing with his family. But more than anything, David loved being a Dad and "Papa." He poured himself into his family. Some of the fondest memories his loved ones hold from his younger years are of him flipping on the trampoline, teaching them to waterski, or tugging them on a tube behind the boat, his laughter echoing across the water. Even in his later years, he remained encouraging, always playful, and always present. Being a Papa to his nine grandchildren brought him immense joy, and he never missed a chance to show his love and support.
Even after his ALS diagnosis, David remained strong in spirit. Though he was in pain, he never let it show. He was the kind of person who smiled through the struggle and made people feel seen and loved. In the hardest seasons of his illness, he never lost his humor, his heart, or his willpower.
He is survived by his wife, Holly Haines-Kohl; his daughters Melissa Gross, Carrie Brill, Heather Dunn, and Kelly Tonelli; nine grandchildren; his sister Jackie Creger and brother Ron Kohl. He was preceded in death by his Mother, Madonna Moore and Father, Richard Kohl, who now welcome him with open arms.
A service to honor David's life will be held at Florida National Cemetery (6502 SW 102nd Ave, Bushnell, FL 33513) on October 24, 2025 at 1:30 PM (please arrive at least 10 minutes early). A celebration of life will follow from 3:00-6:00 PM at the Fox Run Clubhouse (440 Fox Run Blvd Tavares, FL 32778). Flowers or donations may be delivered to the family home at 207 Janelle Ln., Jacksonville, FL 32211.
All who knew and loved David are welcome to attend. Please bring your stories, smiles, and love as we remember a man who meant the world to so many. David's hugs, strength, and laughter will forever echo in the lives of those who loved him and he will be missed dearly.
