David Jacob Lang

1932 - 2026

David Jacob Lang, MD, a pioneering virologist and dedicated pediatrician, passed away at the age of 93. Born on September 24, 1932, in the Bronx, New York, David lived a life defined by intellectual rigor, deep compassion, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of others.

He was the son of Louis Lang, a chemist and expert in candy manufacturing, and Gertrude Lang, whose family came to New York from a Jewish village in modern day Ukraine. He was bar mitzvah'd by the famous Rabbi Stephen Wise, who helped shape the modern Reform Jewish movement. He carried immense pride in his Jewish heritage and the values instilled in him—justice, curiosity, and a commitment to the common good.

David's academic path took him from the Ethical Culture Fieldston School to Swarthmore College, and then to Harvard Medical School, where he began a distinguished career in medicine. He became an early leader in pediatric infectious disease, contributing groundbreaking research, including some of the first studies demonstrating sexual transmission of viruses. He trained under Nobel laureate John Enders and later conducted research in Paris with Luc Montagnier, who won the Nobel Prize for his work on the HIV virus.

Over nearly six decades in medicine, David served as a professor at Duke University and chaired the Department of Pediatrics at University of Maryland. Later, in Southern California, he helped build a pediatric residency program at Children's Hospital of Orange County. Though renowned for his scientific contributions, he was equally known for his devotion to patients, diagnostic acumen, curiosity, and his refusal to give up on those cases others deemed lost causes.

David's life extended far beyond medicine. He enjoyed at times in his life tending to a farm in rural North Carolina, cultivating honey bees, riding horses, and even sailing. His studies and scholarship took him on trips around the world, including London, Paris, and rural India. At home he had collections of medical textbooks, fountain pens, stamps and rare coins. He was a man who embraced people from all walks of life, valuing character over credentials and meeting others with kindness, humility, and grace. In his later years, David found joy in new pursuits including yoga, music, painting, and golf.

He took pride in his family above all else, celebrating their individuality and achievements. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Joann; his son, Joshua, and his daughters Stephanie and Gretchen; along with Mary Jo's children—Jessica, Don, and Mary Beth—whom he loved as his own. He was predeceased by his daughter Becky.

Even as vascular dementia gradually took his independence, his essence remained. He was always the same warm, curious, and kind soul. That character permeated his every interaction including with his family, patients, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered for his remarkable career, but even more than that for spirit of gentle kindness that defined his every interaction.
