David Michael Mathias, 73, passed away on April 12, 2026, in Oxnard, California. Born on November 19, 1952, he lived with quiet observation, curiosity, and for life's simple pleasures.

An Ohio native turned Californian (though his loyalty to Ohio sports never wavered), David spent nearly 37 years in telecommunications, helping keep people connected. He also stayed busy with property management and even launched a hot tub business. He built his life through hard work while spending time with his family and enjoying his hobbies.

David shared 43 wonderful years with his wife, Takiko, whom he met through mutual friends and exchanged letters overseas—we hope this obituary is nearly as sweet as his words. Together, they raised their daughter Linda, who inherited his kind and easygoing nature. He is also survived by his brothers, Gregory and Richard, whom we trust will continue sharing the funny stories—and selectively forgetting the rest. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and always looked forward to family gatherings filled with conversation and memories. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Herman; his older siblings Sylvia, Janet, and John; and twin siblings who passed at birth.

A man of many interests, David was drawn to UFOs and the mysteries of space, as well as the beauty of Earth itself. He happily settled in for sci-fi marathons and enjoyed watching the world unfold from train windows and cruise ship decks. He loved music through a good sound system, movies in the theater with popcorn, and building his entertainment system with cutting-edge technology. He also maintained an impressive collection of remotes, napkins, collectible cars, and watches. Ever practical, he was known for reading the newspaper during meals instead of chatting with those around him, and for checking the weather with precision, ready to open the windows at just the right moment for the perfect cross breeze. We're especially glad he lived to see images from the far side of the moon and to witness another clutch of eaglets hatch.
