David Eugene Rohn of Putney, Vermont passed away at his home on Wednesday, December 10th. He was 91 years old.
Born in Chicago in 1934 to Robert Eugene Rohn and Dorothy Margaret Mills, David was raised in Ludington, MI, on the shores of his beloved Lake Michigan. David developed a passion for art at a young age. After attending military academy in high school and starting college in Florida, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelors and a Masters of Science in Design. From there, David went on to make art the central focus of his life, and that focus stayed with him until the very end. Throughout his life, David lived, taught, and painted in the Midwest, the Northeast, Mexico, France, Turkey, Cyprus, and Japan.
In New York City, David made a name for himself as a prolific and prominent watercolor painter. In 1964, a job in the art department at Windham College brought him from New York to Putney. In the ensuing years, he received multiple grants, and brought art students to Aix-En-Provence, France, to study Cezanne and Romanesque architecture. During these years, David also built the studio in the Putney woods that would later become his home. He gave his five children the gift of childhood in Vermont, surrounded by creativity and exploration. All the while, he woke up every day and continued to make art, regardless of the circumstance.
David's lifelong talent, skill, and dedication to his craft have cemented his legacy as a master watercolor and oil painter. David was a renaissance man in the truest sense. When he wasn't painting, he was traveling, sailing, flying small aircraft, woodworking, cooking, playing music, putting on shows with his handmade puppets, reading, learning, and enjoying time with his family and friends. He was an enthusiastic and invested member of his community in Southern Vermont; he attended concerts, gave artist talks, and hosted vibrant dinner parties all the way into his 91st year. David fostered a deep love of the arts and all things creative in his five children and three grandchildren, all of whom went on to pursue creative paths.
David will be dearly missed by his family, his community, and the art world at large. He is predeceased by his eldest son, Christopher Rohn, who passed away in 1987. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Gibson; his children, Lisa, Jennifer, Andrew, and Cleo Rohn; and his grandchildren, Leo and Julian Rohn-Capellaro and Anya Edwards.
