David Culum Young

David Culum Young (“Cully”), age 64, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on December 14, 2025.
David was born on July 12, 1961, to David and Helen Young in Greenbelt, Maryland. In 1971, his family moved to Albuquerque, a place that would remain his home for the rest of his life. From an early age, David loved the outdoors—fishing, hunting, and exploring the foothills, as well as speeding down dirt roads on his minibike. His natural curiosity and love of working on anything with a motor grew into a lifelong passion for cars and motorcycles.
David worked for many years at Melloy Dodge as a Master Mechanic before beginning a long and distinguished career with the City of Albuquerque. He served as a Fleet Manager and as a sworn officer within several specialized units of the Albuquerque Police Department, proudly retiring after 26 years of service. Deeply committed to both his family and his community, David also shared his love of sports by coaching baseball and football. He coached Little League and YAFL for both of his children, leaving a lasting impact on countless young athletes.
An avid hunter and fisherman, David cherished trips throughout northern New Mexico, Colorado, and Montana—a place he always dreamed of calling home. Still, Albuquerque was where his heart lived. David and his wife Mary created a warm, welcoming home, known for its open door, full table, and frequent gatherings. Cully could often be found at the grill, offering a steady presence, a quick wit, and a bear hug to anyone who needed one. He showed up for others without hesitation, in moments of both joy and sorrow.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his son, David Justin, and daughter-in-law, Kathleen; his four grandchildren, Harper, Charlotte, Natalie, and David Wyatt; his daughter, Kaitlin and her service animal Chuco; son Titus Weeks and daughter-in-law Kim, his sister, Marisa Young, and her husband, John Nocerino; his aunt, Dorothy Young (“Auntie Sis”); and many cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Helen Young.
A tribute to David’s life will be held on Saturday, January 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of Police, 4120 Cutler Ave NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87110.
