Deacon James Patric Stewart born June 24, 1947, to Barbara & William Cotton in Jackson, Michigan then relocated to Gary, IN, where his stepdad James (Jimmy) Stewart lovingly adopted Deacon Stewart as his son.
At an early age Deacon Stewart accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Deacon Stewart graduated from Tolleston High School and was drafted into the military serving in Vietnam War where he spent 42 months in combat duty as a radio technician serving his country.
Coming home with honors Deacon was hired by Bethlehem Steel where he retired after 42 years of service and being affectionately call (BOB) by his co-workers. From his union with Denise, they had James Anthony, Michal Lynn, Angela Marie. In 1991 Deacon united with Georgetta which increased his family with KeJuan and Stephanie that gave him 5 children.
Deacon recommitted his life to Jesus Christ at Christ Baptist Church in 1991. In 2002 Deacon and Georgetta joined Faith Temple of Christ and Deacon became a faithful usher doorkeeper and ordained Deacon to the Glory of God. In time Deacon became a Layman's Graduate and an Eschatology graduate.
Deacon James exchanged time for eternity on February 7, 2026. He is preceded in death by his mother Barbara Stewart; 2 fathers William (Billy) Cotton, James (Jimmy) Stewart; grandbaby Akivia Curtis and son-in-law Kenyon Curtis.
He leaves to cherish fond memories his loving wife Georgetta Stewart of Gary, Indiana; children, James Tony (Tilise) of Indianapolis, IN, Michael (Big Mike) (Cheryl) Stewart, Angela Stewart both of Gary, IN, Marie Stewart, KeJuan (Jackie) Washington and Stephanie (Jesse)Remsburg all of Columbia, South Carolina; Special daughter Monique Knight of Lebanon, TN 2 brothers, Earl (Bernice) Porter of Lansing, MI, and Harrell (Pamela) Terrell of Kalamazoo, MI; sister-in-law, Janita Elder of Gary, IN; 1 aunt Robbie Griffin; 1 uncle Robert "Bobby" (Helen) Cotton all of Jackson, MI; 16 grandchildren; special cousin Raymond Gaston; special neighbor Janes Tuggle; James best friend Johnny (Gail) Tubbs and Gwenita Jordan who actually called him BOB and said she I actually understand BOB and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends that will truly miss him.
Visitation, Thursday, February 19, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. All services at Faith Temple of Christ, 7601 Whitcomb Street Merrillville, IN. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery.
