Dean Edward Egel of 1073 Barcelona Drive, Weidman, Michigan passed away August 12, 2024 in Weidman, Michigan. Dean was born July 22, 1960, in Dayton, Ohio to Joan Murphy Egel and William Labaw Egel. Joan taught school when she wasn’t a stay-at-home mom. Bill also taught school and was a junior high school principal.
Dean grew up in Fairborn, Ohio where he made friends easily whether he was in Boy Scouts or wrestling in high school. Dean enjoyed the out-of-doors with his family, hiking and camping in southern Ohio and fishing and swimming in Lake Erie. Often Dean would invite friends on family outings.
After graduating from Park Hills High School, Dean received a degree in auto mechanics from Hocking Technical College. Dean became manager of an auto maintenance business. However, Dean had talents and interests that ranged beyond auto mechanics. Dean later joined the Coast Guard where he worked as a chef. He used his skills as chef to work in a major hotel restaurant after his time in the Coast Guard. As a chef, he was able to utilize his artistic skills to carve ice sculptures. Another interesting job that Dean held was as a maintenance trouble shooter at a yacht production factory.
When he wasn’t working, Dean could be found building or fixing something, often for a friend. Dean understood how things worked and was good with his hands. Dean also enjoyed playing with his cats and watching birds at his feeder. Dean loved any activity with his three grown children. Dean enjoyed swapping stories and jokes with friends and family.
The last few decades of his life found Dean in various cities in Michigan where Dean could resume his love of the out-of-doors. In later life, Dean also enjoyed reading and discussing classic books. Dean taught himself guitar and keyboard, again demonstrating his artistic skill.
Dean is survived by his three children, Dan, Allie and Ben as well as his brother Dan. Dean is also survived by two grandchildren, Owen and Leo. Dean is preceded in death by his wife Rita and both parents.
