Denise Maureen Washington (nee Jones) died on December 26, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia. She is survived by her daughter Tracee, son Clay (Melissa), granddaughter Ashley, and brother Dwight. Denise was born on February 26, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan. She was the third child, and only daughter, of Maurice and Edith (nee Dykes) Jones. Maurice and Edith's first baby, Maurice Jr., died as an infant, but Denise grew up with her older brother, Dwight Edward Jones. Denise was a cheerleader at Mumford High School; after she graduated, she attended Northern Michigan University, where she met her future husband, Clarence Joseph (Joe) Washington, III. She married Joe after graduation; they were married for sixteen years before divorcing. Denise earned a master's degree in history, with an emphasis on early American history, from the University of Michigan.
Denise taught as a substitute teacher before giving birth to Tracee. She became a stay-at-home mother afterwards, welcoming Clay two years later. Denise was a very involved parent: she was an enthusiastic playmate when they were young and supported their academic and athletic endeavors as they grew older. She was a doting grandmother and loved spending time with her granddaughter. Denise ensured her children knew their own history as well as American history by taking them on museum trips and historic home tours. She was a familiar figure in Piedmont Park with her daily walks. Denise was also an avid reader throughout her life as well as a foodie who enjoyed watching cooking shows; she saved binders full of recipes. She managed multiple health conditions in adulthood but maintained a fierce dedication to her independence. Denise will live on forever in her children and grandchild's hearts.
