Dennis Oliver Van Dyke
May 22, 1953 – November 23, 2025
Dennis Oliver Van Dyke completed his journey on earth on November 23, 2025, surrounded by the love of family and friends. He was born on May 22, 1953, in Chico, California, to Arnold and Barbara Van Dyke.
From an early age, Dennis had a natural gift for connecting with people. He began his schooling at Salem and Citrus Elementary Schools, where he quickly formed lifelong friendships. During these years, he discovered a passion for roller skating at the Spinning Wheel Rink, where he not only performed but excelled—winning numerous competitions and delighting audiences with his talent.
Dennis continued his education at Chico Junior High and Chico Senior High School, graduating in 1971. While in school, he participated in cross-country, track and wrestling, demonstrating the same energy and determination that would define his life. He went on to attend Butte College, earning an Associate of Arts degree in Business in 1973. His curiosity and drive for personal growth led him to further studies at the Barbizon School of Modeling and Acting, the University of Utah, and Metro State College in Denver, Colorado. Along the way, he developed a strong foundation in business and achieved fluency in Spanish.
In the mid-1970s, Dennis followed his adventurous spirit to Israel, where he spent a year living and working on a kibbutz, embracing a communal lifestyle and contributing to agricultural life. This experience sparked a deep love of travel, which led him to explore more than 11 European countries over six months.
That same love of exploration guided him to a career in aviation. Dennis began working with Frontier Airlines and later joined United Airlines as a flight attendant. He was based in Salt Lake City and Denver, and for a time served as an instructor in Chicago, where he trained new flight attendants in both service and safety. His warmth, professionalism, and natural charisma made him a beloved colleague and mentor.
While Dennis loved to travel, he also possessed a keen business sense. He invested in and managed real estate, including the purchase of a ranch in Forestville, California. There, he created a unique and lively home filled with animals and beauty, commuting to Denver while continuing his airline career.
In 2011, Dennis returned to Chico with his beloved partner, Ronnie Zurita. He continued working for United Airlines until his retirement in 2015. Back in his hometown, Dennis remained deeply engaged in his community, serving on the Chico High School Class of ’71 reunion committees and maintaining cherished friendships.
Dennis found joy in gathering people together. Whether at his winter home in Cathedral City, hosting dinners at home, or organizing events, he created spaces where everyone felt welcome. He played an active role in establishing the Stonewall Alliance monthly potluck dinners for older adults and regularly hosted tables at the Elks Lodge’s weekly Queen of Hearts dinners. Dennis was, at his core, a gracious and joyful host—someone who brought people together and made every moment feel special.
To say Dennis loved animals would be an understatement—he truly adored them. His home was always shared with beloved Chihuahuas, and at his Forestville ranch he cared for an array of animals including chickens, black swans, goats, emus, llamas, and sheep; he even had his own bee hives. His compassion for animals reflected the depth of his generous spirit.
Dennis is survived by his loving partner, Ronnie Zurita; his sisters, Pam Cofer and Tambra Van Dyke; his brothers, Daniel Van Dyke and Arnold Van Dyke Jr.; and 12 nieces and nephews who will carry forward his memory. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sandra Van Dyke.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 11, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Chico Elks Lodge, 1705 Manzanita Avenue, Chico, California.
Dennis, you are deeply missed and forever cherished. Your spirit, humor, kindness, and love touched so many lives, and your memory will continue to bring light to all who knew you.
